Zane Grey (1872 - 1939), who wrote prolifically about the American West, devoted nearly all of his spare time to fishing, both salt and freshwater. In addition to his many Western novels, Grey wrote eight books on his fishing exploits, including Trout Fisherman's Inferno. In 1937, he suffered a stroke while fishing for steelhead on the Rogue River in Oregon, and died on October 23, 1939, after just completing his morning workout with a weighted fishing rod in a fighting chair. Pictured are Grey's "The Perfect Fly Reel" (1925) from Hardy Bros., Alnwick, England, and his "Challenge" Salmon Rod from A.W. Gamage, London.
