An American statesman, Whig Party leader, and orator, Daniel Webster (1782 - 1852) was so sickly as a child that he was not expected to work on his parent's farm, but was left to fish, hunt, and read—interests that he sustained throughout his life. Webster is believed to have fished on the Potomac River while serving in the U.S. Congress and as Secretary of State under Presidents Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore. Pictured is his 12 foot, 3-pieced Greenheart fly rod (c.1847).
