Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919), America's 26th President, was a zealous conservationist and outdoorsman who established the U.S. Forest Service, doubled the number of national parks and monuments, and created 51 national wildlife refuges. His ardent interest in protecting America's natural resources was largely formed during his years in the West after the death of his first wife in 1884. Roosevelt took solace in the Black Hills of South Dakota where there was big game and more than 400 trout streams and 14 lakes. As a devoted fly-tyer, the President himself is believed to have tied some of the salmon flies pictured.
